About the role#
The Information Security team at Itron is looking for an intern to support AI-enabled security engineering initiatives. This position offers hands-on experience in applying artificial intelligence, automation, software development, and security engineering practices. You will work alongside security engineers to build and evaluate tools that protect our infrastructure.
What you'll do#
- Develop, test, and document AI-enabled security tools, workflows, and prototypes.
- Use scripting and APIs to automate security engineering tasks, including data collection, enrichment, analysis, and reporting.
- Integrate and evaluate security technologies across cloud, identity, endpoint, network, and data environments.
- Analyze security data to identify patterns, anomalies, and potential threats.
- Assess the security of AI solutions, focusing on access controls, data protection, prompt and model risks, and responsible-use safeguards.
- Maintain technical documentation, test plans, and code repositories.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to define requirements, troubleshoot issues, and deliver project outcomes.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree program related to Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or Artificial Intelligence.
- Foundational knowledge of cybersecurity concepts.
- Intermediate skill in programming or scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, JavaScript, or C#.
- Understanding of AI and machine learning concepts, large language models, or data analysis.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical problems and learn new technologies.
- Strong time management and communication skills.
- Experience with academic, personal, or work projects involving generative AI, machine learning, security automation, or data engineering.
- Familiarity with APIs, Git-based workflows, or notebooks.
- Exposure to cloud platforms, containers, Linux, CI/CD pipelines, or security frameworks like those found in Microsoft Azure or Microsoft 365.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2027.
- The role is based on-site in Liberty Lake, WA, Raleigh, NC, or Austin, TX.
- This position does not offer sponsorship.
