About the role#
As an Electrical Engineer Intern, you will work on-site with our lab team in Raleigh. You will assist in maintaining lab operations and developing automation solutions to improve efficiency. This role requires sound technical judgment, clear communication, and the responsible use of AI-powered engineering tools to create organized and reproducible work.
What you'll do#
- Identify and debug issues across Itron mesh networks, smart-city RF communications, lab computers, and connected test equipment.
- Set up and run engineering tests, verify data quality, analyze results, and compile test reports.
- Collaborate with senior lab engineers on projects, prototypes, investigations, and process improvements.
- Support lab maintenance, equipment organization, calibration tracking, and the safe operation of electrical test setups.
- Develop Python-based automation tools for test execution, data processing, equipment control, and reporting.
- Use AI coding agents to assist with code generation, refactoring, debugging, unit-test creation, and documentation.
- Write clear task specifications and prompts for coding agents, define acceptance criteria, and provide necessary context.
- Review, test, and validate AI-generated code to identify incorrect assumptions, security concerns, and maintainability issues.
- Use source control and issue-tracking practices to document changes and maintain traceability.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or related degree program with at least two years of coursework completed.
- Ability to program in Python and read, troubleshoot, and modify existing code.
- Basic understanding of software development practices including modular design, debugging, testing, and documentation.
- Practical ability to use AI coding assistants while independently reviewing and validating their output.
- Ability to translate engineering tasks into clear requirements, constraints, and test cases for AI agents.
- Experience organizing, cleaning, maintaining, or calibrating lab equipment.
- Awareness of electrical hazards and the ability to follow safety procedures when working around energized or high-voltage equipment.
- Professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Preferred experience includes work with RF systems, analog and digital electronics, embedded systems, Linux, Git, and compiled languages like C, C++, C#, or Rust.
