About the role#
Inova is hiring Nurse Externs for the Winter and Spring 2027 sessions. This program provides hands-on experience in inpatient units to help nursing students build skills and confidence. Externs must complete at least 96 hours on their assigned unit over a 12-week period. The program begins with a mandatory five-day training and orientation session held during daytime hours.
What you'll do#
- Work alongside Registered Nurses to carry out patient care plans.
- Assist with medical treatments, procedures, and the collection of monitoring data or specimens.
- Monitor patients and report changes in condition or symptoms to the RN.
- Document patient care activities according to established standards.
- Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Keep patient information private and confidential.
- Attend simulation exercises and complete all required training and competency checklists.
- Help with unit operations to support patient flow.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a nursing degree program.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Successful completion of at least one acute care (med-surg) clinical rotation.
- A letter of recommendation from a faculty member.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, part-time, on-site role.
- Positions are available at Inova facilities in Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, and Leesburg, Virginia.
- Shifts include day, mid-shift, and night options within inpatient units.
- Program start dates are January 4, 2027, and March 8, 2027.
