About the role#
This is a 10-week summer internship for the HPHS Technology Office. You will work with senior engineers to build prototypes, solve real-world problems, and apply modern AI tools to support our mission. The program focuses on hands-on experience, and you may have the opportunity to present your work to leadership.
What you'll do#
- Support rapid prototype development using AI frameworks and tools.
- Build lightweight front and back ends to help stakeholders interact with prototypes.
- Navigate responsible LLM usage, prompt design, and practical grounding patterns.
- Collaborate with senior engineers and technology partners to test and demonstrate capabilities in real workflows.
- Present your learning and project deliverables to leadership.
What you'll need#
- A minimum of 30 completed college credit hours toward a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related discipline.
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Familiarity with at least one programming language such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Java.
- Experience with version control systems like Git.
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Familiarity with GenAI and LLM tooling, including prompt frameworks, vector databases, and modern LLM APIs.
- Demonstrated interest or experience using AI coding assistants for software development.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- An enthusiasm for learning new technologies.
Location & details#
- Location: Reston, Virginia.
- Term: Summer 2027, beginning early June.
- Modality: Hybrid, with a requirement to be on-site 2 days per week.
- Employment: Full-time.
- Compensation: This position is paid at $27 per hour.
