About the role#
IBM Research is looking for a Summer 2027 intern to join the team in Yorktown Heights. You will work on AI-driven solutions for communication and computing systems at the edge. This role focuses on the intersection of AI systems, signal processing, and computer architecture. You will explore how AI models map onto specialized computing platforms for applications like wireless communications, 5G/6G, and integrated sensing.
What you'll do#
- Develop and optimize AI kernels and inference workloads for custom accelerator architectures.
- Evaluate and benchmark performance, efficiency, and scalability across workloads.
- Map signal-processing and communication algorithms onto specialized computing platforms.
- Prototype algorithms using low-level programming and hardware-aware optimization.
- Collaborate with researchers across AI systems, architecture, and communications domains.
- Identify new opportunities for AI acceleration in edge computing applications.
What you'll need#
- Strong programming skills and experience with low-level software development.
- Foundations in mathematics, algorithms, and numerical methods.
- Experience with AI inference, machine learning systems, or signal processing.
- Familiarity with digital systems, computer architecture, DSPs, or FPGAs.
- Ability to independently develop, prototype, and evaluate technical solutions.
- Experience with kernel development, profiling, and benchmarking.
- Knowledge of machine learning models and inference frameworks.
- Background in wireless communications, computer vision, or sensor processing.
- Demonstrated research experience through publications, open-source work, or technical projects.
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
