About the role#
As a Research Intern, you will join a team working at the intersection of high-performance computing (HPC) and quantum processors. You will focus on accelerating and scaling hybrid HPC-quantum applications. Your work involves taking sequential proof-of-concept code, parallelizing it, and offloading tasks to GPUs to improve performance.
What you'll do#
- Analyze sequential code to find opportunities for parallelization using shared-memory and distributed-memory techniques.
- Identify specific code sections to offload to GPUs.
- Run code at scale across hundreds of GPUs and evaluate performance and scalability.
- Collaborate with quantum scientists to understand how your work impacts their research and algorithm competitiveness.
What you'll need#
- Proficiency in Python and at least one systems programming language such as C, C++, or Rust.
- Hands-on experience with HPC software like OpenMP, MPI, or CUDA.
- Experience developing and running parallel or distributed applications on multi-node HPC clusters using job schedulers like Slurm or LSF.
- GPU programming experience with CUDA, HIP, or portability layers like OpenMP target offload, Kokkos, or OpenACC.
- Familiarity with performance analysis tools and GPU-accelerated numerical libraries.
- Experience bridging Python and compiled code.
- Background in numerical linear algebra, tensor networks, or Monte Carlo methods.
- Exposure to quantum computing concepts or frameworks like Qiskit.
- Comfort with collaborative practices including Git, code review, testing, and CI/CD.
- Ability to communicate technical results clearly and work independently in a research setting.
- Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics.
Location & details#
- Location: Yorktown Heights, New York, United States.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: On-site.
- This is a full-time, paid internship.
