About the role#
IBM Research is looking for a Research AI Engineer Intern to join the team for the Summer 2027 term. You will work alongside researchers and engineers to build, test, and deploy practical AI applications. This role focuses on translating research techniques into solutions for enterprise and user-facing systems, as well as improving the tools used to build and deploy AI.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with researchers and engineers to design, prototype, and implement AI solutions.
- Work with large language models, multimodal models, and agentic frameworks to solve real-world use cases.
- Build and maintain AI agent frameworks that enable scalable orchestration, tool integration, and autonomous task execution.
- Develop experimental demos, proof-of-concepts, and integrations.
- Follow recent AI research and propose ways to apply new methods to practical projects.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing an MS or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong programming skills in Python.
- Familiarity with machine learning fundamentals, natural language processing, and generative AI.
- Understanding of MLOps concepts including model deployment, monitoring, and scaling.
- Prior experience with research projects, open-source contributions, or AI-focused hackathons.
- A strong problem-solving mindset and the ability to work well in a team.

- This is a full-time, paid internship located on-site in Yorktown Heights, New York.
