About the role#
IBM is hiring interns to join the Infrastructure and Technology team in Rochester, Minnesota. You will work on designing, prototyping, and testing hardware systems that support AI and cloud technologies. This role involves hands-on work across mechanical, electrical, materials, and firmware engineering disciplines.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design, model, and validate hardware systems.
- Support mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical, and logic design using CAD, EDA, and simulation tools.
- Participate in PCB layout, circuit design, firmware development, and system bring-up.
- Conduct experiments and analyze data for reliability, process, and materials development projects.
- Write scripts and automation tools in Python, C/C++, or Bash to assist with testing and validation.
- Work in focus areas including mechanical and thermal design, electrical and logic design, photonics, firmware, and materials engineering.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a B.S. or M.S. program in Mechanical, Electrical, Materials, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering.
- Experience with CAD tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Allegro, or Cadence.
- Familiarity with simulation tools such as CFD, FEM, or HFSS.
- Programming skills in Python, C/C++, or Bash.
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment like LabVIEW, MATLAB, oscilloscopes, thermal chambers, or optical test gear.
- Knowledge of firmware development, test automation, or embedded systems.
- Understanding of design-of-experiments or project management in a lab environment.
- M.S. and Ph.D. students with research focus in electrical packaging, photonics, signal integrity, or thermal design are encouraged to apply.
