About the role#
Hy-Vee is hiring a Loss Prevention Intern for the Summer 2027 term. This part-time, on-site position in West Des Moines, Iowa, provides hands-on experience in retail security, asset protection, and corporate safety operations. You will work alongside store leadership, Loss Prevention personnel, and Enterprise Security team members to maintain a secure environment for customers and staff.
What you'll do#
- Monitor store premises, including sales floors, backrooms, and entry points, to identify suspicious activity.
- Support the team with inventory audits, shortage reviews, and efforts to reduce shrink.
- Assist in documenting theft-related incidents, policy violations, and safety hazards.
- Learn to operate surveillance systems and conduct physical store patrols.
- Help organize case materials and maintain accurate documentation for investigations.
- Support safety initiatives, including emergency response protocols and evacuation procedures.
- Assist with compliance reviews and store-level security checks.
- Interact professionally with customers and employees while maintaining confidentiality.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice, Business, Security Management, Retail Management, Homeland Security, or a related field.
- A strong interest in loss prevention, investigations, or law enforcement.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to remain calm and objective in a retail environment.
- Previous experience in retail, security, or customer service is preferred.
