Co-op Engineer: Track Design/Rail - Fall/Winter 2026-2027

About the role#

HNTB is seeking a Co-op Engineer to join the Rail/Track Department. This position offers the opportunity to work under the guidance of experienced engineers on passenger and transit system projects, including planning studies and high-speed rail design. You will contribute to key infrastructure projects for major rail authorities along the Northeast Corridor and across the United States.

What you'll do#

• Assist in the preparation of design documents for trackwork, including alignments, drainage, grading, and cost estimates.
• Develop an understanding of environmental mitigation, as well as transit and high-speed rail design and construction fundamentals.
• Participate in field visits and client meetings.
• Assist with research, development, and the preparation of engineering drawings and technical documents.
• Develop CAD drafting skills and perform basic engineering calculations.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program, with a preference for students who have completed at least two years of study in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Basic knowledge of drafting software such as AutoCAD, Microstation, OpenRail, OpenRoads, or REVIT.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Fundamental understanding of engineering, geometric, and algebraic principles.
• Ability to organize information for technical documents and apply direction from supervisors.
