About the role#
Hatch is seeking a Mechanical Engineering student for a 4-month co-op position within the High Pressure Metallurgy group. You will work from our Mississauga office to support global projects involving proprietary autoclave technology for the extraction of metals like copper, gold, and nickel. This role offers the chance to apply your academic knowledge to complex, real-world engineering problems while receiving mentorship from industry professionals.
What you'll do#
- Assist in studies for commodity-related projects and evaluate process alternatives or technology trade-offs.
- Prepare design calculations, technical specifications, and process equipment data sheets.
- Perform mechanical and piping equipment sizing and provide input to drawings and plant layouts.
- Model piping systems using hydraulic design tools and design Piping and Instrumentation Drawings (P&ID).
- Specialize in piping systems and inline component design, including pumps, valves, and stress analysis.
- Participate in equipment design reviews and process hazard review studies such as HAZID and HAZOP.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations for project teams and clients.
- Provide input to capital and operating cost estimates.
- Liaise with clients, equipment suppliers, vendors, and contractor representatives.
- Provide technical direction and assign work to designers and technicians as needed.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Mechanical Engineering degree program at an accredited university.
- Strong academic performance and active involvement in extra-curricular or volunteer activities.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and strong communication abilities.
- A collaborative mindset with the ability to learn quickly and solve problems.
- A willingness and ability to travel to project sites, including remote locations.
- Previous co-op or summer work experience in a mechanical engineering team is an asset.
- Experience with ASME pressure vessel, piping, heat exchanger design, or metallurgical process equipment is an asset.
- Ability to adapt and embrace change in a project-based environment.

- Compensation: $26.00 to $33.00 per hour.
