About the role#
Hatch is hiring a Tailings Hydrotechnical Engineering Co-op Student for a work term beginning in January 2027. You will report to a Senior Hydrotechnical Engineer in our Calgary office. This role involves working with a team of tailings, geotechnical, process, and piping specialists to plan and design mine tailings and water management facilities. You will contribute to both local and international mining projects.
What you'll do#
- Collect, review, and analyze hydrological, meteorological, and operational data.
- Use GIS, Muk3D, and other software to delineate drainage catchments and prepare water management layouts.
- Assist in the planning and design of infrastructure like diversion channels, ditches, culverts, sumps, ponds, and water conveyance systems.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, including watershed modeling with HEC-HMS and flood routing assessments with HEC-RAS.
- Support the creation of water balance models, technical reports, design calculations, and engineering drawings.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on project delivery.
- Participate in field investigations and site visits, which may involve travel within Canada and internationally.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Civil, Environmental, or Water Resources Engineering program at an accredited university.
- A strong interest in hydrotechnical, water resources, geotechnical, or mining engineering.
- Familiarity with engineering tools like HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, or GIS.
- Previous experience through co-ops, research, or projects related to water resources, mining, or tailings.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- The ability to work independently and within a team.
