About the role#
GM Performance Power Units is seeking a Test Cell Operations Intern for Summer 2027 in Concord, NC. This is a hands-on, learning-focused position where you will support engine and powertrain testing. You will work alongside engineers and technicians to prepare hardware, operate test cells, and collect data. This role is intended for students interested in motorsports and high-performance automotive engineering.
What you'll do#
- Assist engineers and technicians with test plans and procedures.
- Install and remove engines, gearboxes, and components in test cells.
- Prepare test cells, tooling, and instrumentation for scheduled tests.
- Observe and assist with the operation of engine and powertrain dyno systems.
- Perform basic troubleshooting of test setups and report issues to senior staff.
- Collect, organize, and document test data.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of test cell areas.
- Follow all safety procedures and company standards.
- Communicate progress and issues to the test team.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a degree in Mechanical, Automotive, Electrical, or a related engineering field.
- A strong interest in engines, powertrains, or motorsports engineering.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience from school projects, labs, clubs, or personal work.
- Familiarity with engines, drivetrains, or vehicle systems.
- A willingness to learn test cell operations and automation tools.
- Exposure to dyno testing, data acquisition, or MATLAB through coursework or projects.
- Ability to stand, walk, and move in operational environments like race shops.
- Comfort working in loud or high-pressure environments.
