About the role#
As a Motorsports Aero-Thermal Engineering Intern, you will contribute to aerodynamic development within the GM Motorsports organization. You will work alongside experienced engineers and technical leaders on projects that bridge the gap between high-performance racing and real-world engineering innovation. Depending on team priorities and your background, your work will involve computational fluid dynamics (CFD), physical testing, automation, data processing, machine learning, or artificial intelligence applications.
What you'll do#
- Develop and improve CFD workflows, including CAD preparation, geometry cleanup, meshing, solver execution, post-processing, and automated reporting.
- Create tools and methods for wind-tunnel aerodynamic testing, such as test planning, instrumentation, data acquisition, controls, and data processing.
- Build and validate machine-learning or surrogate models to improve aerodynamic performance prediction and flow-field inference.
- Develop AI-enabled tools to improve engineering productivity, accelerate analysis, and support technical decision-making.
- Collaborate with engineers and technical leaders to define requirements, evaluate results, document methods, and communicate recommendations.
What you'll need#
- Pursuit of a graduate degree in physics, mathematics, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computational science, or a related field.
- Graduation date of September 2027 or later.
- Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer of 2027.
- Demonstrated experience developing CFD surrogate models, reduced-order models, or other data-driven methods for performance prediction.
- A strong foundation in mechanical design, aerodynamics, CFD, computer vision, three-dimensional generative design, machine learning, or scientific computing.
- Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills grounded in physical principles.
- Demonstrated engineering capability through research, coursework, or technical projects.
- Ability to communicate complex technical findings clearly to specialized and cross-functional audiences.
- Curiosity, initiative, and a commitment to advancing engineering methods.
- Preferred experience includes motorsports interest, deep-learning model development, scientific programming, software development (version control, CI/CD, DevOps), CAD, and experimental data or wind-tunnel testing.

- Location: Milford, Michigan.
- Work Modality: Hybrid (requires reporting to the Milford Proving Ground at least three times per week).
- Term: Summer 2027.
