About the role#
The Herald-Times in Bloomington is looking for a K-12 education reporting intern for the fall 2026 semester. This is a 12-week, paid internship for students who want to build their reporting skills and gain hands-on experience in a local newsroom. You will work alongside experienced journalists to produce meaningful coverage of education in Monroe County and surrounding areas.
What you'll do#
- Cover school board meetings and local education events.
- Shadow students and teachers during classroom projects.
- Analyze data to evaluate school performance.
- Report on community, education, and student-related trends.
- Produce daily stories while working on deeper enterprise reporting projects.
- Complete at least one enterprise or group project.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree program at Indiana University or another area university, with at least one year of studies completed.
- A career interest in journalism.
- Strong writing, spelling, and grammar skills.
- Critical-thinking and analytical skills, including the ability to work with data.
- Comfort taking photos and shooting digital video.
- Interest in SEO and innovative storytelling techniques.
- A valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and minimum required liability insurance.
- Ability to provide a cover letter and writing samples with your application.

- Location: Bloomington, Indiana.
- Term: Fall 2026 (12 weeks, September through early December).
- Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: 20 hours per week.
- Compensation: $18 per hour.
