About the role#
The Houston Chronicle is seeking a student journalist to join the Breaking News team for a summer 2027 internship. You will report and write stories about events and trends shaping Houston and Texas. This role provides hands-on experience covering news on deadline while working alongside editors, photographers, and audience journalists.
What you'll do#
- Report and write timely, accurate news stories.
- Pitch story ideas by monitoring local news, national sources, social media, and search trends.
- Conduct interviews with officials, witnesses, and community members under deadline pressure.
- Verify information from social media, public records, and other sources before publication.
- Collaborate with the newsroom team to deliver coverage.
- Contribute to live blogs and enterprise follow-ups as news develops.
What you'll need#
- Current status as a junior, senior, or recent graduate.
- Prior experience at a college news publication or professional news organization.
- A personal laptop and reliable Wi-Fi or hotspot access.
- Ability to obtain housing in Houston for the duration of the program.
Location & details#
- Location: Houston, Texas.
- Term: 10 weeks, from early June to early August 2027.
- Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend work based on news demands.
- Modality: Hybrid, with at least 3 days per week in the office.
- Compensation: Paid at $15 per hour.
- Sponsorship: Not available.
