About the role#
Formlabs is seeking a Hardware R&D Engineering Intern for the Fall 2026 term. This role sits within the Platform Technology team, where you will work alongside mechanical, systems, and software engineers to research and develop next-generation 3D printers and materials. You will apply physics, engineering principles, and experimental methods to improve the printing process and deliver high-quality, accurate parts.
What you'll do#
- Design, build, and innovate new 3D printing techniques, ranging from new printer architectures to control system refinements.
- Work across teams to implement improvements to current products, such as refining support structure algorithms based on experimental findings.
- Evaluate current printer performance to identify and execute areas for improvement.
- Design and execute experiments, using the resulting data to inform hardware or software developments.
- Tackle complex, open-ended problems that span multiple engineering disciplines.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Aerospace, or Industrial Engineering.
- Experience with experiment design and data analysis.
- Proficiency in programming and scientific computing, ideally using Python or Matlab.
- Familiarity with mechanical design, mechatronics, CAD modeling, and hands-on prototyping.
- Previous experience working on a consumer product.
- Experience developing physics-based models of complex systems.
- Ability to work autonomously and a willingness to challenge assumptions using data-driven evidence.
- A portfolio of previous engineering work or projects is required.
Location & details#
- Location: Somerville, Massachusetts (On-site).
- Term: Fall 2026 (September 14 - December 18).
- Commitment: Full-time (40 hours per week).
- Compensation: $1,575 - $1,950 per week.
