About the role#
Formlabs is seeking a Hardware R&D Engineering Intern to join the Platform Technology team. This role focuses on the research and development of next-generation 3D printing technologies. You will work in a multi-disciplinary environment alongside mechanical, systems, and software engineers to turn ideas into accurate, high-quality parts.
What you'll do#
- Design, build, and innovate new 3D printing techniques, ranging from new printer architectures to the validation of control systems.
- Collaborate across teams to implement improvements to existing products, such as refining algorithms based on experimental results.
- Evaluate current printer performance to identify and execute areas for technical improvement.
- Design and execute experiments to inform hardware or software development.
- Solve complex, open-ended problems that span multiple engineering disciplines.
What you'll need#
- Experience with experiment design and data analysis.
- Proficiency in programming and scientific computing, specifically Python or Matlab.
- Familiarity with mechanical design, mechatronics, CAD modeling, and hands-on prototyping.
- Previous experience working on a consumer product.
- Experience developing physics-based models of complex systems.
- Enrollment in a degree program for Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Aerospace, or Industrial Engineering.
- A portfolio of previous engineering work or projects is required for your application.
Location & details#
- Location: On-site in Somerville, Massachusetts.
- Term: Fall 2026 (September 14 to December 18).
- Commitment: Full-time (40 hours per week).
- Compensation: $1,575 to $1,950 per week, paid on a bi-weekly schedule.
