About the role#
The Industrial Design Fellowship at Formlabs offers the opportunity to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of designers, engineers, and scientists. Fellows contribute to the development of hardware products, focusing on creating accessible and productive user experiences while communicating brand values through functional design.
What you'll do#
- Participate in the design process for new products from the initial idea through to production.
- Develop design concepts using clear and compelling visual communication.
- Prototype continuously, ranging from quick mockups to refined cosmetic models.
- Test designs with users and translate feedback into the design process.
- Create high-quality CAD to communicate design intent.
- Collaborate with Product, UI Design, Engineering, and Manufacturing teams to develop balanced solutions.
- Assist with cosmetic specification and validation.
- Refine the hardware user experience, including unboxing and maintenance.
What you'll need#
- A completed degree in Industrial Design (related design or engineering degrees, such as Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Graphic Design, or Civil Engineering, are considered).
- A robust portfolio of relevant design work.
- Demonstrated fluency in aesthetic decision making and a strong eye for detail.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD, Keyshot, and Adobe CC.
- Ability to communicate effectively using hand sketches.
- Experience solving problems while considering engineering and manufacturability constraints.
- Comfort with a variety of prototyping methods.
Location & details#
- Location: On-site in Somerville, Massachusetts.
- Commitment: Full-time.
- Term: 6 months, rolling start date.
- Compensation: $1,575 to $1,950 per week, paid on a bi-weekly schedule.
