About the role#
Ephemeris Net is hiring engineering interns for the Fall 2026 term to work on optical terminals for space-based laser communications and networking services. You will join a small engineering team to build infrastructure that enables data movement in space. Interns will be assigned a mentor and a specific project based on their background and company needs. You will be expected to scope your project, execute the work, and present your results at the end of the term.
What you'll do#
- Design and implement optical transceiver FPGA firmware.
- Build a space network simulator.
- Design and fabricate test fixtures or mechanical subsystems for optical terminal prototypes.
- Build high speed optoelectronic communication test equipment.
- Write embedded flight software.
What you'll need#
- Demonstrated ability to build things through personal projects, research, coursework, or prior internships that produced tangible results.
- Strong fundamentals in at least one of the following: embedded systems and FPGA development, software engineering (C, C++, Python, or Rust), optical or mechanical design, electrical engineering, information theory, or networking and simulation.
- Prior experience with FPGA development using Verilog, VHDL, or SystemVerilog.
- Ability to work on-site for a minimum of 3 months, 3 days a week.
- Must be a US person as defined by 15 CFR § 772.1.
- Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Computer Science.

- Locations: Oakland, CA or El Segundo, CA.
- Modality: On-site, 3 days a week minimum.
- Compensation: $70,400 annual salary, prorated for the length of the internship.
