About the role#
This internship provides exposure to the technical skills and safety practices required for the Relay Technician profession. You will work alongside Journeymen and Apprentice level technicians to support the Relay Construction and Maintenance department. This team executes design packages for substation and transmission facilities and maintains protective relays and SCADA control systems to ensure grid reliability.
What you'll do#
- Learn the fundamentals of relaying, protective schemes, controls, alarms, and distribution SCADA.
- Practice writing basic isolation procedures.
- Gain experience with print reading and the red mark process.
- Develop an understanding of RTS, CT and VT circuits, and NERC compliance requirements.
- Build basic troubleshooting skills and learn to arrange work activities in a logical order.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a two or four-year degree program in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Computer Engineering or a related Engineering Technology major.
- A cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.
- Graduation date set for after August 2026.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Must be at least 18 years old before starting the internship.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time internship for Summer 2027.
- The role is on-site at company facilities. You may be exposed to noise, mechanical or electrical hazards, and will be required to wear personal protective equipment.
- You must be able to lift 50 pounds and work at heights or from suspended platforms.
- Positions are available in Charlotte, Aberdeen, Sanford, Leland, Asheville, Greensboro, Oxford, New Bern, Raleigh, Garner, and Goldsboro, North Carolina, as well as Greenville and Florence, South Carolina.
