About the role#
As an Associate Project Designer Intern, you will work under the direction of a mentor to design overhead and underground electric distribution systems. This role balances office work with field inspections, requiring you to manage projects from initial design to construction coordination. You will gain hands-on experience in utility infrastructure while supporting our team in delivering reliable energy.
What you'll do#
- Design distribution facilities based on customer load requirements and existing infrastructure.
- Perform material allocation and prepare time and cost estimates for subdivision construction and maintenance.
- Manage the relocation of distribution facilities.
- Inspect job sites and determine metering requirements.
- Prepare sketches for property and service agreements.
- Handle administrative tasks including joint use notification CATV permits, underground agreements, and revenue calculations.
- Determine tree-trimming requirements and initiate necessary activity.
- Obtain right-of-way and easement agreements, along with highway and railroad permits.
- Communicate electrical and construction requirements directly to customers.
- Assist with service restoration in the field during power outages.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a 2-year or 4-year degree program, with a graduation date of Spring 2028 or later.
- A minimum GPA of 2.5.
- A valid driver's license.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.
- Effective planning, organization, and project coordination abilities.
- A curious mindset with a willingness to learn and follow established procedures.
- Physical ability to perform field duties, including walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and standing for long periods.

- Location: Richmond, Virginia.
- Modality: Hybrid, with approximately 60% office work and 40% field work.
- Term: Rolling.
- Compensation: $22.00 - $28.00 per hour, depending on academic major and classification.
