About the role#
As a State and Local Tax (SALT) Intern, you will work alongside experienced tax professionals to research and analyze tax issues. This role provides hands-on experience in a professional accounting setting. You will gain insight into firm practices and build professional relationships while receiving coaching on state and local tax laws.
What you'll do#
- Participate in the preparation, filing, and completion of voluntary disclosure agreements for sales and use tax, income tax, and unclaimed property.
- Draft tax memoranda and other documents regarding various tax issues.
- Assist in drafting responses to notices received from state taxing authorities.
- Prepare models for tax and unclaimed property exposure analysis.
- Utilize Caseware, Go Systems, and other tax software to complete basic tax returns.
- Monitor current tax law changes and apply them to assigned tax returns.
- Manage the collection and retention of workpapers for assigned clients.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Bachelors or Masters program in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a relevant field, or a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) or Master of Laws (LLM) program.
- Basic knowledge of accounting and tax theory.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to research taxation topics and compose written analysis effectively.
- Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to follow directions.
- Capacity to multitask and work both independently and within a team.
