About the role#
The School Age Site Intern supports the daily operations of youth programs at the Dover YMCA. This role focuses on maintaining a safe, supportive environment while assisting with classroom activities and child development. Interns work under the direct observation of a School Age Assistant to ensure compliance with state regulations.
What you'll do#
- Supervise children and group activities to ensure safety and developmentally appropriate care.
- Provide daily care, including feeding and supporting the social and emotional needs of children.
- Encourage and engage children during classroom activities, mealtimes, transitions, and gross motor play.
- Assist in planning and implementing age-appropriate daily activities.
- Observe and document child progress and development.
- Communicate effectively with co-workers, administrators, and parents to maintain positive relationships.
- Maintain a clean and safe facility by monitoring equipment and program spaces.
- Complete required documentation, such as attendance records and meal counts.
- Participate in family nights, staff meetings, and professional development training.
What you'll need#
- Must be at least 16 years of age and at least four years older than any child in your care.
- Successful completion of three college credits in recreation, elementary education, school-age care, or school-age administration (or 15 clock hours of quality-assured training).
- Ability to complete a physical and tuberculosis screening with physician documentation within 30 days of hire.
- Successful completion of criminal history, child abuse, and adult abuse background checks.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse groups.
- Patience, compassion, and active listening skills.
- Preferred majors include Psychology, Human Resources, Nursing, Public Health, and Communications.

- Schedule: Rolling term. Preference is given to candidates available for 5 mornings, 5 afternoons, or both.
