About the role#
The School Age Site Intern supports the daily operations of youth programs at the Dover YMCA Family Center. This role focuses on ensuring child safety, supporting developmental activities, and maintaining a positive environment for children. Interns work under the direct observation of a School Age Assistant to ensure compliance with Delacare Regulations.
What you'll do#
- Supervise children and group activities while following safe and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Provide daily care, including feeding and supporting the social and emotional needs of children.
- Encourage participation in classroom activities, including instructional times, mealtimes, and transitions.
- Assist in planning and implementing age-appropriate daily activities to support learning.
- Observe and document child progress and development.
- Maintain a clean and safe facility and equipment.
- Complete required program documentation, such as attendance records and meal counts.
- Communicate effectively with co-workers, administration, and parents to maintain collaborative relationships.
- Participate in staff meetings, family nights, and professional development training.
What you'll need#
- Must be at least 16 years of age and at least four years older than any child in your direct care.
- Successful completion of three college credits in recreation, elementary education, school-age care, or school-age administration, OR 15 clock hours of quality-assured training in school-age care.
- Completion of a physical and tuberculosis screening with physician documentation within 30 days of hire.
- Successful completion of criminal history, child abuse, and adult abuse background checks.
- Strong interpersonal and active listening skills.
- Patience, compassion, and the ability to maintain classroom discipline.
- Preferred majors include Psychology, Human Resources, Nursing, Public Health, and Communications.
