About the role#
The School Age Site Intern supports the Walnut YMCA Family location by helping provide care and educational support for children. You will work under the direct observation of a School Age Assistant to ensure a safe and healthy environment. This position is paid and offered on a rolling basis.
What you'll do#
- Supervise children and lead assigned activities while following safe childcare practices.
- Provide daily care, including feeding and supporting social and emotional needs.
- Encourage children during classroom activities, mealtimes, transitions, and play.
- Use positive behavior management techniques to maintain a supportive environment.
- Assist in planning and participating in daily classroom activities to help children learn.
- Document child progress, attendance, and meal counts.
- Communicate with parents, co-workers, and staff to maintain consistent care.
- Help keep the facility and equipment clean and well-maintained.
What you'll need#
- You must be at least 16 years of age and at least four years older than the children in your care.
- Completion of three college credits in recreation or education, or 15 clock hours of quality-assured training in school-age care.
- Ability to pass a criminal history and child abuse background check.
- Completion of a physical exam and tuberculosis screening within 30 days of hire.
- Proficient active listening skills to understand the needs of children and parents.
- Majors in Psychology, Sociology, Human Resources, Philosophy, or Nursing are relevant to this work.
