About the role#
WEX is seeking a Data & AI Intern for the Summer 2027 term. You will join the Data Acquisition Team, which serves as the entry point to our Data-as-a-Service platform. This team is responsible for ingesting, validating, and orchestrating raw data from various internal systems and third-party providers across batch, streaming, and event-driven patterns. You will work on projects that ensure data quality, performance, and governance are embedded in every step of the process.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to projects that use AI and machine learning to address business needs such as fraud prevention, credit risk assessment, and real-time decision making.
- Develop and enhance our agentic AI platform and build intelligent agents that automate workflows.
- Create advanced platforms and tools to process, enrich, and optimize core company data.
- Design and implement AI-assisted workflows to optimize our production environment.
- Apply specification-driven development and declarative system design to build scalable, model-driven solutions.
- Work with big data technologies, including ingestion, processing, and analysis.
- Partner with experienced engineers and researchers to brainstorm solutions and overcome technical challenges.
- Present research findings and project outcomes to the team and stakeholders.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Demonstrated programming experience with the ability to write, read, test, debug, and troubleshoot code.
- Hands-on experience developing software or programming solutions through internships, coursework, research, or personal projects.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java, Python, C++, C#, or JavaScript.
- Ability to apply programming concepts and problem-solving skills to build effective, maintainable solutions.
- Hands-on experience with data analysis, manipulation, or visualization.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP and core DevOps practices.
- Exposure to data processing tools including SQL, ELT, and data warehousing, as well as foundational AI/ML concepts.
- Interest in Spec-Driven Development and using AI assistants to write structured code.
- A solution-oriented mindset with a desire to master scalable system design.
- Ability to articulate technical ideas clearly and work effectively within a team.
- A drive to turn business problems into practical, user-centric software solutions.
- Prior contributions to open-source projects or academic publications are a plus.

- This is a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2027.
