    About the role#

    The Health Sciences Library Research and Data Services department is looking for a student to assist with a semester-based project. You will explore large-scale text and data mining workflows and test tools like Dimensions and ProQuest TDM Studio. This role reports to the Research and Data Services Manager and works closely with the Research Data Scientist.

    What you'll do#

    • Explore and document computational text mining workflows including data access, preprocessing, and analysis.
    • Conduct an environmental scan of how other academic health sciences libraries provide text and data mining services.
    • Complete a pilot workflow demonstration for library staff to test feasibility and identify potential issues.
    • Create documentation for internal use and develop learning materials for library webpages, such as example code or tutorials.

    What you'll need#

    • Experience working with Python or R.
    • A genuine interest in text mining.
    • A willingness to learn new skills.
    • Enrollment as a current undergraduate student at the University of Virginia.

    Location & details#

    • This is an on-site position at the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library in Charlottesville, Virginia.
    • The schedule is approximately 10 hours per week on weekdays, with a preference for Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
    • Some hybrid hours may be arranged.
    • The project is expected to run through the Fall 2026 semester.
