About the role#
The UVA Library is hiring three students to serve as Programming Consultants for the Away from Keyboard (AFK) series. This role focuses on exploring cognition and creativity through tactile experiences like weaving, music, and hand printing. You will assist in planning and promoting events that highlight the library's artists' book collection. This position runs throughout the 2026-2027 academic year, requiring a commitment of approximately 40 hours per semester.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with Special Collections librarians to plan and facilitate events showcasing artists' books.
- Write blog posts and create social media content to promote collection items.
- Support the promotion and logistics of various AFK program events.
- Research and document how the university engages with unplugged pedagogy and embodied learning.
- Attend in-person events as required for program support.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate student.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience using library catalogs and databases for research and citations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of dependability.
- Interest in libraries, the arts, or research related to rare books is preferred.
Location & details#
- This position is based in Charlottesville, Virginia.
- Work is primarily on-site, though some tasks may be completed remotely. Handling artists' books must occur in the Special Collections library reading room during operating hours.
- The pay rate is $20 per hour.
- Work-Study eligibility is preferred but not required.
