About the role#
The Department of Forestry is hiring a Conservation Project Assistant to support a large-scale forest land conservation project. This project involves approximately 22,000 acres of forest land and functions as a complex real estate transaction between a private landowner and the Commonwealth of Virginia. You will gain experience in state agency operations while working on a project designed to protect working forests from development.
What you'll do#
- Review legal documents related to real estate transactions, including appraisals, boundary surveys, title searches, deeds, and closing documents.
- Assist in the development and review of Baseline Documentation Reports for easement acquisitions.
- Organize and manage documentation required for project real estate transactions.
- Learn to review and produce basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) maps.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a UVA student (undergraduate 3rd or 4th year or graduate student).
- Federal Work-Study eligibility.
- Interest or experience in managing legal aspects of real estate transactions.
- Familiarity with reviewing real estate documents such as appraisal reports, title insurance commitments, and purchase contracts.
- Familiarity with GIS.
- An interest in learning about the state procurement of real estate services.
