About the role#
The Office of Utility Engineering is seeking a student assistant to work under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer. You will learn core workflows and processes while contributing to projects like pavement rehabilitation, bridge widening, and middle mile broadband network development. This position offers a chance to gain hands-on experience in transportation engineering while working with a team of professionals.
What you'll do#
- Assemble and log utility maps from utility owners and review them for accuracy.
- Use software such as MicroStation or AutoCAD to plot draft utility line work.
- Draft utility verification requests, conflict memos, and prepare draft utility conflict matrices.
- Assist in coordinating and processing lane closure requests.
- Participate in Project Development Team meetings and conference calls.
- Use Google Earth to explore above ground features and record findings.
- Occasionally accompany engineers to the field to attend meetings and make observations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college student in a Civil Engineering program.
- Completion of at least two years in an engineering program.
- Minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Enrollment in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students.
- Ability to work independently and show initiative.
- Strong commitment to assigned tasks and reliability.
Location & details#
- Location: Oakland, California.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Flexible hours between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Compensation: $18.28 to $28.16 per hour.
- Status: Part-time, temporary, non-benefited position.
