About the role#
As a Nurse Extern in the ICU at Trinity Health Oakland, you will work alongside Registered Nurses and interdisciplinary teams to build clinical skills. This position is located in a 30-bed unit that handles adult trauma, neuro, cardiothoracic, surgical, and medical ICU patients. You will gain hands-on experience while supporting patient care in a supervised setting.
What you'll do#
- Partner with Registered Nurses to deliver compassionate patient care.
- Assist patients with daily living activities like bathing, feeding, and mobility.
- Monitor patient conditions and report changes to the RN promptly.
- Support the patient admission, transfer, and discharge process.
- Assist with nutritional support, intake monitoring, and documentation.
- Provide comfort measures that respect patient dignity and cultural needs.
- Participate in patient and family education under the supervision of an RN.
- Collaborate with the care team to support positive patient outcomes.
- Take part in unit initiatives focused on safety and quality improvement.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program, with active student status required throughout employment.
- Completion of at least two clinical nursing rotations, including one in Medical-Surgical care.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Enrollment in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is preferred.
- Strong communication skills and a patient-centered mindset.
- Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Adaptability and a willingness to learn in a clinical setting.
Location & details#
- Location: Pontiac, Michigan.
- Employment type: Contingent, part-time.
- Schedule: Rotating shifts, including day and night options. A minimum commitment of 4 shifts per month is required, which includes weekend work.
- Physical requirements: This role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting or transferring patients and equipment.
