About the role#
The Nursing Extern position is an opportunity for nursing students to join our health care team. You will support direct patient care and assist with clinical unit operations. As an unregulated health care provider, you will collaborate with inter-professional teams across the hospital. This role is a fixed-term, part-time position where contract length is determined by the remaining duration of your schooling.
What you'll do#
- Assist patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and grooming.
- Help staff with patient lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, and ambulating.
- Support patient comfort and skin integrity through measures like bed-making and range of motion exercises.
- Maintain a clean, tidy environment and ensure patient belongings are safe.
- Set up patient rooms for admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Assist with meal setup and feeding.
- Stock isolation gowns and mask supplies.
- Document care provided in the electronic health record.
- Enhance therapeutic relationships between nurses, patients, and family members.
- Uphold patient privacy, confidentiality, and dignity at all times.
- Practice procedures according to infection control policies and universal precautions.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in the second to fourth year of a CNO-approved Baccalaureate Nursing program or the final year of a Practical Nursing program.
- Recent patient care or acute care experience is preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize your workload.
- Excellent communication and problem assessment skills.
- Commitment to customer service, teamwork, and individual leadership.
- Understanding of infection prevention, control practices, and safety policies.
- Computer literacy and conflict resolution skills.

- Compensation: $21.80 per hour.
