About the role#
The Clinical Extern position is a part-time role for nursing students to join the health care team. You will support direct patient care and assist with clinical unit operations. As an unregulated health care provider, you will collaborate with inter-professional teams across the hospital. This role is a fixed-term position with a duration based on your remaining schooling.
What you'll do#
- Assist patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living.
- Provide support with patient lifting, turning, transferring, and ambulating.
- Ensure patient skin integrity and provide comfort measures.
- Maintain a clean and safe patient environment.
- Follow infection control policies and use universal precautions.
- Set up patient rooms for admissions, transfers, and post-operative care.
- Assist with meal setup and feeding.
- Stock isolation gowns and mask supplies.
- Support nurse-client therapeutic relationships and communicate with family members.
- Document care provided in electronic health records and complete required reports.
- Uphold patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Perform pre-established range of motion exercises.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in the second to fourth year of a CNO-approved Baccalaureate Nursing program or the final year of a Practical Nursing program.
- Recent patient care or acute care experience is preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with computers and problem assessment.
- Commitment to customer service, teamwork, and individual leadership.
- Understanding of infection prevention, control practices, and safety policies.
- Ability to resolve conflicts.
