About the role#
As a Surgery Technician Intern at Sky Lakes Medical Center, you will work under the supervision of a licensed RN or Certified Surgical Technician. This full-time, on-site role involves supporting the surgical team to ensure quality patient care in the operating room. You will gain hands-on experience in a clinical environment while assisting with various procedures and maintaining safety standards.
What you'll do#
- Prepare for procedures by scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.
- Maintain a sterile environment throughout the setup and the procedure.
- Arrange tables, instruments, and supplies based on the scheduled operation.
- Assist with patient preparation and draping.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon regarding instrumentation, sutures, sponges, and supplies.
- Monitor the patient for physical status changes and assist during emergencies.
- Perform accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating RN.
- Help label surgical specimens and apply dressings or casts.
- Clean the surgical suite after each case.
- Manage patient positioning and assist with moving patients.
- Handle medications on the surgical field safely and obtain necessary equipment.
- Follow OSHAS safety policies and universal precautions while maintaining patient confidentiality.
What you'll need#
- A basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Ability to obtain BLS certification within 60 days of hire and maintain it.
- Compliance with the legal requirement for the grandfathered training clause.
- Proficiency in operating all required surgical equipment.
- Ability to stand in a limited area for most of the shift and stoop frequently.
- Physical capacity to push or pull up to 1200 pounds frequently and lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Excellent eye-hand coordination.
- Capacity to work under stress and meet time demands.
- Ability to adapt to changes and work within a controlled traffic pattern.
