About the role#
This is a full-time, paid internship for a Surgery Technician at Sky Lakes Medical Center. You will work under the supervision of a licensed RN or Certified Surgical Technician to support the operating room team.
What you'll do#
- Prepare for procedures by scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.
- Maintain a sterile environment during setup and throughout the operation.
- Organize tables, instruments, and supplies based on the scheduled surgery.
- Assist with patient preparation and draping.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon regarding instrumentation, sutures, sponges, and other supplies.
- Monitor the patient for changes in physical status and support emergency procedures when necessary.
- Perform accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating RN.
- Help label surgical specimens and apply dressings or casts.
- Clean the surgical suite after each case and manage equipment needs for the patient, surgeon, or anesthesiologist.
- Ensure patient positioning is correct and assist with patient transfers.
- Adhere to hospital confidentiality, safety policies, and universal precautions.
- Adapt to changing priorities and maintain flexibility for emergency standby needs.
What you'll need#
- A basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Ability to obtain BLS certification within 60 days of hire and maintain it.
- Compliance with the legal requirement for the grandfathered training clause.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods, stoop frequently, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Capacity to push or pull up to 1200 pounds and work under time-sensitive conditions.
