About the role#
Shulman & Partners LLP is seeking an Articling Student for the Summer 2026 term in our Ottawa office. This role provides practical exposure to family law through a structured mentorship model, offering guidance from senior lawyers to build your competency and confidence. You will work in a hybrid environment focused on professional development and hands-on file progression.
What you'll do#
- Support lawyers on active family law matters with ongoing mentorship.
- Conduct legal research, interpret legislation, and summarize relevant case law.
- Draft court and settlement materials, including correspondence, pleadings, affidavits, briefs, and supporting documents.
- Assist with the review of financial disclosure, including organizing documents and preparing financial statements.
- Prepare materials for mediations, conferences, motions, and trials.
- Attend court and dispute resolution processes for observation and participation where permitted.
- Communicate professionally with clients, counsel, and court staff.
- Coordinate with clerks and administrative support to ensure tasks are completed accurately and on time.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited JD program and eligibility to article in Ontario through the LSO.
- Strong judgment, maturity, and the ability to handle sensitive client matters with confidentiality.
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
- A high standard for accuracy and thoroughness in drafting, research, and reviewing evidence.
- Strong organization and reliability in meeting deadlines.
- A genuine interest in family law and a commitment to learning and professional growth.
