About the role#
As a Material Engineer Intern, you will join the Analytical Services team at our Chicago headquarters. This role focuses on material testing and ensuring conformance to specifications. You will report to the Assistant Manager of Analytical Services and gain hands-on experience in a professional laboratory environment.
What you'll do#
- Perform laboratory testing and characterization of metallic, polymeric, and composite materials.
- Assist with sample preparation, data collection, and the interpretation of test results.
- Support failure analysis investigations involving plastics, rubber, coatings, and metal assemblies.
- Participate in root cause investigations by examining components and documenting observations.
- Operate and maintain advanced laboratory instrumentation, including microscopes, hardness testers, and various spectrometers.
- Compile laboratory data to generate charts and summaries for technical reports.
- Collaborate with Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality, and New Product Development teams.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives to optimize testing efficiency and lab workflows.
- Adhere to all company safety requirements and laboratory best practices.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited university degree program.
- Academic concentration in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Intent to return to school full-time following the internship.
Location & details#
- Location: Chicago, Illinois.
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Full-time, 1st shift (8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday).
- Compensation: $22 to $30 per hour, based on experience.
