About the role#
This internship provides hands-on experience in electrical maintenance and engineering within an industrial mining environment. You will work alongside experienced maintenance personnel to diagnose equipment issues, plan infrastructure upgrades, and improve maintenance documentation. This is a paid, full-time, on-site role based in Rapid City, South Dakota.
What you'll do#
- Assist with troubleshooting electrical and control systems.
- Support circuit design and modifications to optimize controls.
- Collect and document data for motors, variable frequency drives, starters, and breakers.
- Analyze equipment age and condition to identify infrastructure that has exceeded its service life.
- Obtain replacement quotes from suppliers and develop equipment replacement schedules.
- Maintain equipment records, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Update the annual ground check master spreadsheet and track grounding system compliance.
- Review existing preventative maintenance procedures and suggest improvements to increase reliability.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, Industrial Technology, or Electrician training program.
- A basic understanding of electrical theory, controls, and troubleshooting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and data organization.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A commitment to workplace safety.
- Familiarity with motor control centers, VFDs, motors, and electrical distribution systems is preferred.
- Experience reading electrical schematics or diagrams is helpful.
- Prior exposure to industrial or manufacturing environments is a plus.
