Student Extern (DVM)

About the role#

This student externship offers hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital. You will work under the direct supervision of a skilled doctor to grow your technical skill set and explore potential career paths. This program is designed to expose you to a variety of medical, surgical, diagnostic, and dental procedures within a clinical setting.

What you'll do#

• Work closely with your mentor to gain hands-on veterinary experience and professional guidance.
• Learn the components of a physical examination.
• Observe and assist during surgical procedures.
• Develop technical skills, including blood draws, urine analysis, fecal analysis, catheter setting, and ET tube placement.
• Participate in the hospital environment by reviewing patient history, creating treatment protocols, and calculating drug dosages and fluid rates.
• Support your mentor with client communication while ensuring the safety of pets, clients, and the team.
• Adhere to medical standard operating protocols, including sterility procedures and radiation and controlled substance compliance.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an AVMA accredited veterinary program.
• Ability to provide proof of medical and professional liability insurance.
• Strong observational and communication skills.
• A professional and respectful manner at all times.
• A willingness to learn, take direction, and adapt to changing situations.

• Work Modality: On-site at a Vetco Total Care hospital.
