Student Extern (DVM)

About the role#

The Student Extern (DVM) position offers veterinary students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art hospital environment. Working under the direct supervision of a skilled mentor, you will develop your clinical, surgical, and diagnostic skill sets while exploring potential career paths. This is a paid, on-site, full-time role with a rolling term.

What you'll do#

• Work closely with a mentor to gain hands-on veterinary experience and knowledge.
• Learn the components of a physical examination.
• Observe and subsequently assist during surgical procedures.
• Develop technical skills including blood draws, fecal and urine analysis, catheter setting, and ET tube placement.
• Review patient history, assist in creating treatment protocols, and calculate drug dosages and fluid rates.
• Support mentors with client communication and ensure safety by adhering to medical standard operating protocols, including sterility and restraint procedures.
• Perform care within the scope of the State Practice Act under direct supervision.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an AVMA accredited program.
• Ability to provide proof of medical and professional liability insurance.
• Strong observational and communication skills.
• Ability to maintain a professional and respectful manner at all times.
• Initiative and a willingness to learn and take direction.
• Ability to work as a team player in a hospital environment.

Location & details#

• Location: Vancouver, Washington.
• Work Modality: On-site at a Vetco Total Care hospital.
• Compensation: $18.00 - $28.50 per hour.
