About the role#
The Memphis Zoo offers an internship opportunity with the Pachyderm team. You will work directly with keepers to gain experience in elephant husbandry, including enrichment, training, medical procedures, foot work, and record keeping. While the focus is on the care of five geriatric African elephants, you will also have the opportunity to work with Southern White Rhinos, Grant’s Zebra, and Scimitar-Horned Oryx. This is an unpaid, full-time position spanning 10-12 weeks.
What you'll do#
- Assist in the facilitation of formal and informal public presentations.
- Actively observe animal behavior and check for signs of illness or disorder.
- Prepare daily diets and maintain accurate records for assigned animals.
- Clean and disinfect animal enclosures according to written protocols.
- Complete a special project covering observations, research, or enrichment.
What you'll need#
- Must be a college student or recent graduate who has completed at least their first year at an accredited institution.
- Pursuing a degree in Biology, Environmental Engineering, Psychology, Nursing, or a related science field.
- Ability to work up to 40 hours per week for the duration of the 10-12 week program.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to follow directions.
- Enthusiasm and good judgment when interacting with children and zoo guests.
- Must be 18 years or older and able to pass a background check and TB screening.

- Modality: On-site.
- Physical requirements: You will frequently work outdoors in various weather conditions, including rain, humidity, and extreme temperatures. The role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and kneeling, with the ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
