About the role#
The Memphis Zoo offers an internship opportunity with the Cat Country and Zambezi River Hippo team. This position provides firsthand experience in animal husbandry, focusing on the physiological and psychological well-being of species including felids, hippos, Nile crocodiles, flamingos, and African hoofstock. Interns will work alongside zookeepers and team leads to support daily operations and habitat maintenance.
What you'll do#
- Assist zookeepers and team leads with daily husbandry tasks for assigned animals.
- Observe and document animal behavior.
- Prepare daily diets and maintain accurate records.
- Clean and disinfect animal enclosures and habitats according to written protocols.
- Facilitate formal and informal public presentations to engage guests.
- Maintain work areas and resources in an organized manner.
- Complete a special project focused on observation, research, or enrichment.
What you'll need#
- Current student or graduate pursuing a degree in zoology, biology, veterinary science, or a related field.
- A GPA of 3.0 or greater.
- Ability to commit to 24-40 hours per week for a 10-12 week period.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to follow directions.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm and sound judgment when interacting with children and zoo guests.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to pass a background check and TB screening.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite is considered a beneficial skill.

- Location: Memphis, Tennessee.
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Modality: On-site.
- Physical requirements: This role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, and kneeling. Interns must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
