About the role#
The Memphis Zoo offers an internship opportunity with the Cat Country and Zambezi River Hippo team. This program provides hands-on experience in animal husbandry, focusing on the physiological and psychological well-being of species including felids, hippos, Nile crocodiles, flamingos, and African hoofstock. Interns work alongside zookeepers and team leads to maintain habitats and support daily operations.
What you'll do#
- Assist zookeepers and team leads with daily husbandry tasks for assigned animals.
- Observe and monitor animal behavior.
- Prepare daily diets and maintain accurate animal records.
- Clean and disinfect animal enclosures and habitats according to written protocols.
- Facilitate formal and informal public presentations to engage zoo guests.
- Maintain work areas and resources in a clean and organized manner.
- Complete a special project focused on observation, research, or enrichment.
What you'll need#
- Current student or graduate pursuing a degree in biology, zoology, veterinary science, or a related field.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Availability of 24 to 40 hours per week for a 10 to 12 week period.
- Ability to follow directions and communicate effectively.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm and sound judgment when working with children and zoo guests.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Successful completion of a background check and TB screening.

- Term: Fall 2026.
- Modality: On-site.
- Note: This is an unpaid internship. Housing is not provided. The role requires working outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and humidity. Physical requirements include frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
