About the role#
The Memphis Zoo offers an internship for the Fall 2026 term focused on the Cat Country and Zambezi River Hippo teams. You will work alongside keepers to learn about animal husbandry, habitat maintenance, and the physiological and psychological well-being of the animals. This team cares for various species including felids, hippos, Nile crocodiles, flamingos, and African hoofstock. This is an unpaid, on-site, full-time internship.
What you'll do#
- Assist zookeepers and team leads with daily husbandry tasks.
- Observe animal behavior and document findings.
- Prepare daily diets and maintain accurate animal records.
- Clean and disinfect enclosures and habitats following established protocols.
- Facilitate public presentations to engage zoo guests.
- Maintain work areas and resources in an organized manner.
- Complete a special project focused on observation, research, or enrichment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment or graduation in a degree program related to zoology, biology, veterinary science, or a related field.
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Availability to work 24-40 hours per week for the duration of the 10-12 week program.
- Ability to follow directions and communicate effectively.
- Enthusiasm and good judgment when interacting with children and guests.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Ability to pass a background check and TB screening.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including rain, heat, and cold.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.
