About the role#
MDU Resources Group is seeking a second year law student to join our Legal Department for a twelve-week internship starting in May 2027. You will work directly with in-house attorneys on legal matters involving our regulated utility and pipeline businesses. This role offers exposure to areas such as utility regulation, commercial contracts, litigation, corporate governance, and environmental compliance.
What you'll do#
- Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda, summaries, and analyses.
- Draft and review contracts and other legal documents.
- Support litigation, regulatory proceedings, and administrative matters.
- Review proposed legislation, regulations, and agency actions that affect company operations.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and materials for attorneys and management.
- Attend meetings and present research findings to stakeholders.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an ABA-accredited Juris Doctor program with at least two years of study completed by May 2027.
- Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
- A business-minded and practical approach to legal work.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work on-site at our corporate office.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Successful completion of pre-employment background checks and drug testing.

- Location: Bismarck, North Dakota.
- Term: Summer 2027 (mid-May through August).
- Status: Full-time, paid internship.
- Note: Housing is not provided by the company.
