About the role#
The Engineering Co-op reports to the Regional Lean Specialist. You will support the deployment, evaluation, and implementation of Lean methods within the Marmon Transportation Group. This role focuses on improving safety, quality, performance, and cost. You will work directly with employees at all levels of the plant to drive operational excellence.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with the local team to identify process gaps and implement improvement activities.
- Manage lean transformational projects at the plant level.
- Facilitate Value Stream Maps and Kaizen events from initial planning through execution and follow-up.
- Lead conversations to keep teams focused and accountable for action items.
- Provide formal and informal training, coaching, and mentoring to employees regarding Lean methods.
- Partner with the automation team to optimize processes and build justifications for automation projects.
- Develop competency plans for both yourself and the plant to support continuous improvement.
- Report data and progress against plant objectives to site leadership.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration, or Operations Management.
- Energy, enthusiasm, and the initiative to create programs and drive outcomes.
- Ability to lead and influence others without formal control.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Smartsheets.
- Previous experience with Lean or automation through internships, projects, or extracurricular groups.
- Motivation to work 4-12 hours per week during the school year.
- Ability to travel 20-50% to other facilities and relocate to different business units for various terms.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time, on-site position.
- Locations include Chicago, Illinois, as well as sites in Alabama, North Carolina, and Michigan.
- This is a rolling term position with a preference for candidates who can commit to multiple semesters.
