About the role#
The Engineering Co-op reports to the Regional Lean Specialist. You will support the deployment, evaluation, and implementation of Lean methods within the Marmon Transportation Group. This is a development role for individuals looking to build leadership and technical skills while working directly with employees at all levels of the plant.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with local teams to identify process gaps and implement improvements in safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
- Manage lean transformation projects at the plant level.
- Facilitate Value Stream Maps and Kaizen events from initial planning through execution and follow-up.
- Coach process owners on using engineering and Lean methods to achieve operational goals.
- Provide training and mentoring to help employees understand and apply continuous improvement tools.
- Establish performance measures and report data to track progress against plant objectives.
- Partner with the automation team to optimize processes and build justifications for new projects.
- Lead meetings and manage your own travel plans and project priorities.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree program such as Industrial, Mechanical, Business, Operations, Computer, Civil, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Smartsheets.
- Initiative to create programs and drive outcomes.
- Ability to lead and influence others without formal control.
- Capacity to travel 20-50% to other facilities or shops.
- Motivation to work 4-12 hours a week during the school year.
- Previous experience with Lean, automation, or CAD software like SolidWorks or Fusion 360 is a plus.

- This is a full-time, paid, on-site position.
- Locations include Chicago, Illinois; Alabama; North Carolina; and Michigan.
- This role operates on a rolling term basis.
