    About the role#

    The Lansing Board of Water & Light is seeking two interns for the Electric System Integrity Department for the summer of 2027. This department manages the engineering, design, and problem-solving for transmission, substation, and distribution assets. You will work under the supervision of a department mentor to gain experience in utility operations and system planning. This is a full-time, paid internship running from May 17, 2027, to August 13, 2027.

    What you'll do#

    • Collaborate with internal departments on assigned projects.
    • Learn distribution system planning, design tasks, and material applications.
    • Assist with planning studies and recommend solutions to improve system reliability.
    • Gain experience with transmission planning and system protection, including recommending device settings.
    • Use standard office software and SAP for daily tasks.
    • Participate in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System.
    • Follow the BWL Safety Manual and wear required personal protective equipment during field work.
    • Attend training sessions and safety awareness programs.
    • Comply with all company policies and work rules.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in an accredited engineering program, specifically Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering.
    • Junior or senior status during the summer of 2027 and enrollment in fall 2027 classes.
    • A minimum GPA of 3.0.
    • Ability to remain in a stationary position for most of the workday and operate a computer.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with other departments verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
    • Ability to move about in industrial environments and on uneven terrain occasionally.
    • Successful completion of a background check, substance screening, and physical.

    • Pay: $23.00 per hour.
