    About the role#

    IBM is looking for Hardware Developer Interns to join our team in Tucson. You will work on the systems that drive the quantum revolution and the AI era. This role involves developing, testing, and supporting the hardware, firmware, and semiconductors used in IBM infrastructure, including zSystems, Power Systems, Storage, and Quantum Systems.

    What you'll do#

    You will participate in various stages of the hardware development lifecycle. Your work will include:

    • Logic (RTL) design and verification, physical design, and analog/IO design
    • Electronic design automation and performance modeling
    • Signal and power integrity analysis
    • Microelectronics packaging and materials characterization
    • Mechanical design, thermal design, and testing
    • Circuit and PCB physical design and layout
    • Voltage regulation and power delivery
    • Processor and system test, validation, and characterization
    • Firmware architecture, development, and test failure analysis
    • Product quality, assurance, and analytics
    • Customer and field engineering support

    What you'll need#

    We are looking for students pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Optics Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields. You should have prior project or internship experience in computer hardware or testing.

    Strong candidates will possess:

    • Proficiency in VHDL, Verilog, RTL, SPICE, TCL, UVM, verification, and testing
    • Proficiency in C/C++, Git, Linux, and GDB
    • Proficiency in Python, APDL, TCL, Bash, Perl, or Java
    • Proficiency in CAD tools and 3D modeling
    • Coursework in VLSI Design, Microprocessors, Computer Architecture, and Signal Integrity
    • Familiarity with hardware architectures like VLSI, FPGA, MIPS, RISC-V, Arm, x86, Arduino, or Quantum systems
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • A growth-minded, team-focused, and resourceful approach to engineering

    It is preferred that you have at least three months of experience in designing or manufacturing hardware products, along with basic knowledge of computer architecture, programming languages, and circuit simulation tools.
