About the role#
As an AI Software Engineer Intern at IBM, you will work with experienced engineers to turn advances in large language models into software. You will help build features that diagnose system issues, connect AI to enterprise data, and simplify how developers work with complex systems. You will take features from prototype through testing and refinement.
What you'll do#
- Design, build, and test AI-powered features that address developer and client needs.
- Integrate LLMs, APIs, and enterprise data into applications, exploring agent workflows, tool calling, and retrieval.
- Write clear specifications and effective prompts while using AI development tools.
- Review and test code, including AI-generated output.
- Evaluate AI behavior with realistic test cases to measure quality and performance.
- Improve how applications handle incorrect outputs and system failures.
- Debug across model interactions, application code, and underlying systems.
- Collaborate through Git, code reviews, and technical discussions.
- Document your work and iterate based on feedback.
What you'll need#
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, software design, and testing.
- Proficiency in Python and experience building applications or services that integrate APIs.
- Hands-on experience building an application or working prototype with LLMs.
- A systematic debugging mindset to investigate failures and reason about how systems interact.
- Ability to translate problems into clear requirements, prompts, and testable acceptance criteria.
- Capability to critically evaluate AI-generated code and responses.
- Familiarity with Git and clear technical communication skills.
- Ability to learn quickly and collaborate effectively on a team.
- Pursuing a degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering.
