About the role#
This is a part-time externship at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. You will work in a training capacity under the close supervision of a Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, Registered Respiratory Therapist, or preceptor. This position focuses on gaining clinical experience by supporting the daily operations of the respiratory department.
What you'll do#
- Administer basic respiratory therapy treatments to patients, including oxygen therapy, aerosol and medication delivery, IPPB, and ultrasonic treatments.
- Assist with patient care by lifting, turning, moving, and transporting patients using wheelchairs and stretchers.
- Clean, prepare, and store respiratory therapy supplies and equipment.
- Notify your supervisor regarding supply shortages or defective equipment.
- Participate in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Handle clerical tasks such as answering telephones, recording messages, and receiving visitors.
- Comply with all safety and infection control standards while maintaining a courteous, customer-focused approach.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an approved Respiratory Therapy Registry Program with at least two semesters completed.
- Ability to communicate clearly in both oral and written formats.
- Skill in compiling, organizing, and maintaining accurate patient records.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with patients, visitors, and medical staff.
- Physical ability to perform required duties, including lifting and bending during CPR and when repositioning adult or infant patients.
- Capacity to push equipment, supply carts, and wheelchairs weighing between 5 lbs and 400 lbs.
- Strength to lift boxes and stock items ranging from 3 lbs to 60 lbs.
- Good judgment to understand and respond to the unique needs of different patient age groups.
