About the role#
The Nurse Extern program at Hurley Medical Center is an educational support system designed to help nursing students gain clinical experience. You will work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse who will delegate tasks based on your skills and the needs of the patient. This is a 10-week program that focuses on professional growth through competency testing and performance evaluations. Please note that this program does not require a commitment for employment after completion.
What you'll do#
- Perform basic patient care activities such as physical and pain assessments, dressing changes, wound care, and personal hygiene.
- Assist with clinical procedures including urinary catheterizations, venipuncture, enteral tube placement, chest tube care, and respiratory care tasks.
- Support the Registered Nurse in developing nursing care plans by gathering data through observation and reporting findings.
- Document patient information with an RN co-signature and participate in nurse-to-nurse reporting.
- Collect and label lab specimens and perform point-of-care testing after completing required competencies.
- Assist with patient admissions, discharges, transfers, and family education.
- Perform support duties such as transporting patients, stocking supplies, and answering unit phones.
- Participate in audits, performance improvement activities, and mandatory educational programs.
- Note: Nurse Externs are not permitted to administer medications.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program in good academic standing.
- Completion of at least the 1st semester for general medical/surgical departments, 2nd semester for other adult nursing departments, or the OB/Peds rotation for the Pediatric Department.
- A resume, unofficial transcripts, and two letters of recommendation from nursing school or clinical rotations.
- A cover letter detailing your areas of interest, career goals, and your top two nursing departments of interest.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role and maintain effective working relationships with staff, patients, and families.
