About the role#
GM Performance Power Units is hiring a Health & Safety Engineering Intern for the Summer 2027 term. You will work on-site at our Concord, North Carolina facility, supporting the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) team across our manufacturing, laboratory, and testing operations. This role offers hands-on experience in hazard recognition, risk assessment, and safety compliance within a high-performance engineering environment. You will also complete an independent health and safety project during your time with us.
What you'll do#
- Support safety consultation for manufacturing, test, quality, facilities, and maintenance functions.
- Conduct workplace observations and hazard assessments to identify risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Assist with investigations into incidents and near-misses, including fact gathering and corrective action follow-up.
- Evaluate specific occupational hazards such as machine safety, ergonomics, chemicals, compressed gases, and material handling.
- Participate in safety reviews for new equipment, installations, and testing operations.
- Develop and deliver safety training, toolbox talks, and awareness activities for employees and contractors.
- Support compliance assessments, internal audits, and emergency preparedness drills.
- Maintain safety records and documentation for assessment results and inspection findings.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree program for Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Fire Science, Industrial Hygiene, Emergency Maintenance, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of workplace safety principles gained through coursework or prior experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365, specifically Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with technicians, engineers, and leadership.
- Willingness to spend time in active manufacturing and laboratory environments.
- Familiarity with OSHA requirements, 40 CFR environmental regulations, or HAZWOPER concepts is preferred.
- Prior experience in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, or other technical environments is a plus.
